The performance includes selections from IDT’s recent show, Moving Forward with choreography by Kylie Dimick, Marla Hansen, Evan Stevens and Antonio Carnell. Contemporary Dance Ensemble (CDE) will present a fascinating array of pieces by Angela Banchero-Kelleher, Sarah Donohue, Michio Ito, and Carl Flink. Particularly notable will be Michio Ito’s “Tone Poem I and II”. Michio Ito (1893-1961) was born in Japan and came to the United States in 1916, where he continued his work in dance and theatre. Ito created 10 unique gestures of the arms that are the basis for his choreography. Ito’s life-long aspiration was to connect the East and the West through his choreography and peace-keeping efforts. Ito is often considered a forgotten Modern Dance pioneer because his prolific career in the US ended abruptly with WWII. Within 24 hours of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Michio Ito was unjustly arrested, accused of espionage, and incarcerated. Ito was repatriated to Japan as part of a prisoner exchange in 1943 where he lived and worked until his death.
Contemporary Dance Ensemble (CDE) is an excellent pre-professional modern dance company at Utah Valley University. Company members work with a variety of nationally and internationally acclaimed choreographers and have opportunities to perform regionally, nationally and internationally.
We create, perform, and teach dance so that Idaho communities can experience dance.
Idaho communities fully embrace the art of dance.
